Retro City Rampage has made a tremendous impression and garnered amazing success on the PS Vita. Brian Provinciano, developer of the classic game inspired romp, announced on his developer blog why the current versions of Retro City Rampage enjoyed a healthy update on the PS Vita (and PS3, Steam). This update will implement “faster cars, tips screens, shop icons on the map, additional tutorials, checkpoints, level balancing and more.”
But the blog update revealed a bit more insight into Provinciano’s intentions behind Retro City Rampage. While at first glance the game can be and has been compared to an 8-bit GTA, Provinciano felt that core aspects of combat were not fully realized or communicated. The importance of using strategy and specific abilities went under used though are highlighted in additional tutorials and tip screens.
The most refreshing part of the blog is the fact that Brian Provinciano listened to the playtesters. “I’d rush to address it and a better game was the result. I credited this as being a key reason for the game’s awards and hot reception leading up to its launch.” Though being a listening post and welcoming criticism for a one man operation has its draw backs. “Being a one man show, I had to juggle everything from the programming, design and bug fixing to the business, production, trailer, store assets, marketing, emails, PR and most of all, certification and platform requirements.”
